Knights News · Higley’s Keaton Jones is Going the Extra Mile

My name is Keaton Jones. I’m 15 years old, heading into my Sophomore year at Higley High School. I have had a love of water for as long as I can remember, and swimming has become one of the biggest aspects of my life. A little about me: I broke the National Age Group Record in the 200 backstroke at the age of 14, the current 3rd and 4th spot behind me are the current gold medalist and the current world record holder in this event. I qualified for the Olympic Time trails at age 14. I won gold at the 2019 Jr. National Championships, many state records in the state of Arizona, and multiple first place finishes at State Championships.

As you can imagine, I was excited and nervous to compete on the biggest stage in my sport at Olympic Trials. As Covid has taken over our world, it makes you stop and think. I have my dreams, but that does not seem so important right now. The amount of suffering that Covid has caused has really opened my eyes to what is important in life. I will always pursue my dreams, but only in the right time.

I, along with my training partner Devin Esser, have decided we are going to do what we can to help. We have decided to swim a mile every hour for 24 hours straight on June 6, 2020. Our frontline workers are an inspiration as they work around the clock during this pandemic. We are going to go the extra mile for them. We will swim one mile every hour at the top of the hour but on the 24th hour we  will swim another one for them ( going the extra mile). We are doing this to raise money for medical supplies, PPE, etc. all proceeds will be distributed all over Arizona to retirement homes, assisted living home, and long-term care facilities. In the state of Arizona, well over 50% of Covid deaths occur in our most vulnerable population.  During this difficult time, Devin and I began to search for ways we could help our community. At 15 there is only so much I can do, but I will do my best by doing what I love… swimming with purpose. However, we cannot do this alone because we all are in this together. We ask for your support in helping us raise funds for this worthy cause so please contribute before June 6, 2020 by clicking here. Thank you in advance for your support!
